Urban art comes to Market Estate

Jordan Gomez works with an artist from Tall Tales to create graffiti art at Market Estate20 November 2009

Southern Housing Group’s young residents at Market Estate in Islington were given the chance to take part in a unique graffiti-art project on Saturday 14 November.

Following meetings with young people living on the estate, the Group worked in partnership with London based design practice, Tall Tales, to organise a graffiti-art class on the estate. The activity was held in a contained area near the estate’s Clocktower Place and was aimed at 13-18 year olds living at Market Estate. All art materials were provided, including spray paints, sketch books and safety masks.

Reinvestment Director, Stephen Ross, said:

“This was a fantastic opportunity for our young residents to get involved in art, have fun and meet new people. The workshop was supported by the Group’s community regeneration arm, the Foundation, which works to deliver projects to benefit residents. Some of the artwork might be displayed as part of a bigger art exhibition planned for next year.”

Project curator, Gadi Sprukt, said:

“Saturday was great fun for everybody involved. I'm grateful to the artists, Lovepusher and Bonzai, who led the young participants through a brilliant, creative workshop. It’s very pleasing to be giving young people new skills and interests which we hope will encourage their interest in art and creative practice in future.”
