Residents Mrs Salmon and Mr Attah celebrate Black History Month at Janson and Gurney RoadSouthern Housing Group’s supported residents from London, Thames Gateway and the South East came together to celebrate Black History Month at Janson and Gurney Road on Thursday 15 October.

To mark the celebration, pupils from Grangewood Primary School gave a reading of Martin Luther King’s famous speech, ‘I have a dream’. Thanks to funding from the Foundation, residents were also entertained by a steel band and disco provided by DJ Chris Thurston.

Alison Park, Scheme Manager at Mitchell House in Sussex, said:

“Both staff and residents really enjoyed the day. The event was a great way to celebrate and reflect on important people and events in black history. It provided the perfect opportunity for sheltered residents from our different regions to meet each other.”

Bim Amokeodo, Headteacher of Grangewood School in Stratford, said:

“We were delighted to be invited to take part in the Group’s Black History Month. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the pupils’ performance of Martin Luther King’s speech, which they will also share with their peers in assembly.”

Established in 1926, Black History Month is celebrated every October to celebrate and promote knowledge of black history and culture.

Group residents who would like to organise their own social events can apply for a small grant by visiting: //www.shgroup.org.uk/Residents/Grants-for-residents/Small-grants-for-residents/
